Mind the Language

Prof. Mrinal Chatterjee:

The election campaign rhetoric in several States of the country including Odisha is touching a new low. In fact, the choicest invectives are being hurled. The two major parties in Odisha, ruling BJD and its main contender this time BJP on full page print media advertisements call each other ‘sadajantrakari’, ‘kuchakri’, which mean ‘conspirators’. BJD charges the BJP-led Union government of not giving the State its due. BJP accuses the BJD-let State government of not being able to spend or wilfully not spending funds given by the Centre.

The same thing more or less is happening across the country.Amidst the intemperate trading of charges and calling the other party names — the spirit of federalism is dying a slow death in the country.
