Janadesh: Gatekeeping the Right Way

Updated: Apr 6, 2019

From raising electoral awareness among voters and informing them about voting procedure, Doordarshan News (DD News) as a terrestrial public service TV news channel has been adhering to Election Commission guidelines. A part of the IMPECT Study (#IMPECTStudy #WeAreWatchingYou) from March 10 to 20 analysed ‘Janadesh’, a special news programme on general elections telecast by DD News.

Venturing beyond the standard norms of giving objective and even-handed overview of ‘appropriate’ news in the context of upcoming elections, DD News hit a different trail in Janadesh, analysing various electoral issues. The bilingual programme had political analysts and senior journalists on board to share their perspectives. Their opinions and views dwelt at length on the pros and cons of all the issues discussed.

Some of the issues highlighted were on the growing differences and defections among political parties, new alliances being formed especially the Mahagathbandhan or grand alliance in Uttar Pradesh, the role of regional parties and their probable impact on elections. Politicians switching to other parties, Priyanka Gandhi’s campaign in UP, the BJP’s core committee meetings, sloganeering during Rahul Gandhi’s campaign in Bengaluru, highlights of Narendra Modi’s campaign, release of AIADMK and DMK election manifestos, ground reports on election fever and fielding of candidates from states like Odisha, Bihar, Arunachal Pradesh and Sikkim and analysis of strategies used by parties to persuade voters on social media were some of the issues discussed in-depth in Janadesh.
